About Amil Shaban

I was born in Palestine, in a village called Bir-Maeen, a suburb of the City of Ramallah to the west of Jerusalem. My father was a scholar in Islamic teaching. I grew up in Jerusalem.

The Israeli Palestinian crises made growing up in the Holly City of Jerusalem hard. However, man has power to develop resilience and to adjust to the various conditions or environmental aspects.

In the old city of Jerusalem, I attended the Ibrahimiah High school for all my preparatory schooling. When I was 18 yrs old I was fortunate to travel between Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt with a scholar from the Islamic Mission of America where I worked as a translator. In the course of my work, in the year 1966, I obtained a student visa to the United States.

In the US, I enrolled to study toward a degree in mechanical engineering, but the next year I had to drop out, because I was not able to concentrate so I could study. The 67 Arab-Israeli war broke out, and I found myself driven against my will to live in fear but from a distance. This time, the fear that I was knowing was worse than when I was growing up living in the city of Jerusalem, because I was distant and I had no way of knowing if my parents and family were out of harm way or not.

I never managed to finish my degree in mechanical engineering, but in the year 2012, I graduated with a Bachelor Degree in the English Art from the University of Phoenix Arizona. Interestingly, my love of being a mechanical engineer, followed me throughout my entire professional career. I worked as a mechanical technician until my retirement in the year 2015.

I have been writing poetry in both languages Arabic and English since my early youth. I have also another passion which is in philosophy and theology, and I have written extensively in this area as well.

The purpose of this website is to share my work. Right around when I began my journey in the US, Peggy Lee sang a song that was titled – that’s all there is. And so – that’s all there is!
